Repair it, or replace it?

Two inputs turn a pressured decision into a calmer comparison. The result is free, ungated, and clearly labeled as a rule of thumb rather than a quote.

A large repair on an older system creates two legitimate choices. The useful question is not which option sounds cheaper today. It is which option makes better sense after age, repair cost, equipment condition, and replacement scope are all visible.

This tool runs a common age-times-repair-cost rule of thumb and tells you when the result falls close to the line. It does not use an email wall and it does not pretend to know the installation price for your home.

1. How old is the system?

Not sure? The manufacture date is usually printed on the data plate of the outdoor unit, and the first four digits of the serial number are often the week and year.

If you have not been quoted yet, put in what you expect, or your best guess.

This does not change the math. It changes what we tell you about the math.

Free, instant, and no email required to see it.
The method

What the number actually means.

No black box. Here is exactly what is being calculated and what grounds it.

The rule

Age of the system in years multiplied by the repair quote in dollars. This worksheet uses $5,000 as a rough comparison line, not a professional standard. Its only purpose is to show when both written options deserve attention.

The grounding

The score uses only the age and the repair amount you enter. Any replacement decision still needs a home-specific written quote with equipment and installation scope.

The honesty

Results near the line are reported as close because the rule cannot see the equipment condition, recent repair history, comfort problems, or installation scope.

Questions

Repair or replace: the real questions.

This worksheet multiplies the age of the system in years by the repair quote in dollars and uses $5,000 as a comparison line. It is a rough rule of thumb, not a professional standard, diagnosis, price, or guarantee. Use it to decide when both written options deserve comparison.
